Trail Conditions

Date Conditions
3/27/2010 This is the final grooming report for Cedar Mountain for the 2009-2010 season. There is still snow on the mountain, unlike other places in the state, but our hours and funding have ended. We were able to groom Navajo Lake on Thursday March 25, but that will be our last run of the winter. Thank you for a good season on the mountain and we hope to see you again next winter. You can contact us at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park at 435-648-2800 if you have any questions. Thanks again.
3/13/2010 With spring approaching, our grooming program is starting to wind down. With increased visitation at the state park, our time is going to be more and more limited, but we’ll get up on the mountain when we can. We plan to groom the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail on Monday the 22nd, and probably Navajo Lake/Duck Creek Ridge later in the week. There is still lots of snow up on Cedar Mountain with our measuring stick at the Sage Valley turnoff showing about 6 1/2 to 7 feet of snow. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
3/13/2010 With our training in Salt Lake last week, we were not able to do any grooming until Friday night. On Friday the 12th, we were able to groom the Cedar Breaks trail as far as the old water tank. We planned to groom on Saturday the 13th, but a big storm is forecast, so we’ll probably wait until it’s past. Snow depth at the Sage Valley turnoff was almost 7 feet on Friday the 12th. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
3/8/2010 Last Friday the 5th we were able to groom the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail, but that may be the last of the grooming for a little while. We have training in Salt Lake from the 8th through the 12th (Monday through Friday) and won’t have enough hours available to groom this week. We hope to get back up on the mountain on Saturday and Sunday nights. The storms this week should keep the snow deep and conditions good. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
3/4/2010 We were up grooming on Wednesday the 3rd and had a breakdown of our snowcat, so we were unable to complete the Lava Beds run as planned. We were able to get the ‘cat up and running again on Thursday the 4th, but the wind and snowstorm on Thursday pretty much erased all the trails. We plan to groom the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail on Friday the 5th. Next week, we have training in Salt Lake for most of the week, so we may not be able to groom for the week of the 7th through the 12th. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
3/3/2010 This week we have been able to groom the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail on Sunday the 28th and Navajo Lake/Duck Creek Ridge on Monday the 1st. We plan to groom Lava Beds on Wednesday the 3rd and Cedar Breaks again on Friday the 5th. Snow depth at the Sage Valley turnoff is still about 6 feet. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/28/2010 Conditions on Cedar Mountain are very good right now. We got a few inches of new snow out of the recent storms and the depth at our gauge at the Sage Valley turnoff is right at 6 feet. We were able to groom Lava Beds and Sage Valley on Thursday the 25th, and Cedar Breaks/High Mountain on Friday the 26th. We’ll groom Cedar Breaks again on Sunday the 28th and Navajo Lake on Monday, March 1st. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/24/2010 Between weather and manpower issues, we were not able to get all the trails done last week, but the plan is to do better this week. On Tuesday the 23rd we were able to groom the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail. We plan to do Navajo Lake on Thursday the 25th, and Cedar Breaks again on Friday the 26th. We’ll try and do Lava Beds/Duck Creek Ridge on Saturday the 27th . There is a storm forecast for the weekend, so we’ll see what that does to us. Snow depth on the mountain is still good and conditions are good as well. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/19/2010 On Thursday the 18th we groomed the Navajo Lake trail and we plan to groom the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail on Friday the 19th and Lava Beds/Duck Creek Ridge on Saturday the 20th. There has been no new snow this week and the warm days have melted and compacted the snow. Snow depth at the Sage Valley turnoff is about 5 ½ feet. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/15/2010 On Saturday the 13th we groomed the Lava Beds/Sage Valley/Duck Creek Ridge trails and on Sunday the 14th we groomed the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail. We plan to groom Navajo Lake on Thursday the 18th, Cedar Breaks/High Mountain again on Friday the 19th and Lava Beds/Duck Creek Ridge on Saturday the 20th. Conditions on the mountain have been relatively warm and the trails are hard and compacted. Snow depth at the Sage Valley turnoff is about 70 inches. There has been a lot of usage this week, and the trails have been well used. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/13/2010 We ran into a problem on Friday night the 12th and were not able to finish the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail. An oil leak forced us to turn back early and we couldn’t finish the run. We’re going to try and fix the problem on Saturday the 13th and get in the Lava Beds run on Saturday night. If all goes well, we’ll get back up on Sunday the 14th and do the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail then. Conditions still seem good up on the mountain with close to 6 feet of snow at the Sage Valley turnoff. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/12/2010 We were able to groom the Navajo Lake trail on Tuesday the 9th but we weren’t able to get to the Lava Beds run on Thursday the 11th. We plan to do Cedar Breaks/High Mountain on Friday the 12th and will do Lava Beds/Duck Creek Ridge on Saturday the 13th. Conditions are good on the mountain with still about 6 feet of snow at the Sage Valley turnoff. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/9/2010 There is about 6-8 inches of new snow up on Cedar Mountain from the last storm, and conditions are excellent. We groomed the Cedar Breaks/High Mountain trail on Monday the 8th. We plan to do Lava Beds/Duck Creek Ridge on Tuesday the 9th, Navajo Lake on Thursday the 11th and Cedar Breaks again on Friday the 12th. The Snotel website is reporting 84 inches of snow at Midway and our measuring stick at the Sage Valley turnoff is showing right at 6 feet of snow. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/5/2010 We were able to get some repairs done on our cat and are getting back to grooming. On Thursday the 4th, we groomed Navajo Lake and on Friday the 5th we plan to do Cedar Breaks/High Mountain. Saturday the 6th is scheduled for Lava Beds. There is snow forecast for the weekend, so that may change plans, but we’ll try and keep you informed. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
2/1/2010 We’re having mechanical problems with our snowcat, so for the time being, we won’t be doing any more grooming until we can get it fixed. The trails should be in reasonable shape, but there is more snow forecast for the end of the week. We’ll update this message as soon as we’re able to report something new. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
1/27/2010 Highway 14 over Cedar Mountain has been reopened. We’re still trying to catch up after the big storms last week. With 3 ½ feet of new snow it has been slow going. We were up grooming on Saturday the 23rd , Sunday the 24th and Monday the 25th. With another storm forecast for Wednesday, we will try and get back up on Thursday the 28th. We plan to groom on Thursday the 28th, Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
1/22/2010 The storms this week have caused some problems up on Cedar Mountain. On Friday the 22nd, Highway 14 was closed due to a snow blockage somewhere between Midway and Duck Creek. The information we heard was that it was not likely to be opened before Monday the 25th. The good news is that we were able to make the repairs on the SnowCat and the groomer is ready to go again. As soon as we can get back up to Midway, we’ll get started grooming again and let you know how things are. At last report, there is 2-3 feet of new snow on the mountain, so conditions can be difficult off the trails (if you can find them under all that new snow). Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
1/21/2010 We’re still having mechanical problems with our groomer, and until we get the parts in, we won’t be able to do any grooming. On Wednesday the 20th the snow depth at the Sage Valley turnoff was up to 4 feet and it was snowing hard. With more snow in the immediate forecast, conditions on the mountain are looking good. Please be aware of the new powder and don’t get stuck if you can help it. We’ll try and keep this report updated as conditions change. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
1/18/2010 We were grooming the Lava Beds trail on Saturday night and had a mechanical problem on the groomer and blew a hydraulic hose. We’ve gotten the new hose and are ready to resume grooming. But with the heavy snow predicted for Cedar Mountain this week, we’re not quite sure when we’re going to get back up there. Right now, the plans are to go up Wednesday the 20th and as often as possible after that till we get caught back up. We’ll try and keep this report updated and let you know what’s going on. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
1/12/2010 Still now new snow on Cedar Mountain and the trails are still hard packed and smooth. The old snow seems to be holding up well, but there is a little melting and compacting going on. Snow depth is still near 3 feet at the Sage Valley turnoff. On Saturday the 9th, we groomed the Lava Beds/Duck Creek Ridge trail. Tuesday the 12th we plan to groom Cedar Breaks/High Mountain and we’ll do Navajo Lake either Wednesday or Thursday night. We’ve had some problems with people trying to drive their vehicles on the groomed trails. Please be aware that it is a violation of Utah law to drive a wheeled vehicle over 800 pounds on any groomed trail. In addition to the fine, the towing charge to get it unstuck will hurt, too. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
1/8/2010 With no new snow on the mountain lately, the trails are pretty hard packed and smooth. Snow depth at the Sage Valley turnoff is still about 3 feet, but the warm days have melted and compressed it a bit. We groomed Navajo Lake on Tuesday the 5th, Lava Beds on Wednesday the 6th and Cedar Breaks/High Mountain on Thursday the 7th. The Yamaha dealer in Duck creek is grooming the Strawberry Point trail on their own schedule. We plan to be back out on Lava Beds and Duck Creek Ridge trail on Saturday the 9th. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
1/2/2010 On Saturday, January 2, we groomed Lava Beds, Sage Valley and Duck Creek Ridge Road. On Monday, January 4 we groomed the Brian Head/High Mountain trail and on Tuesday the 5th we did the Navajo Lake trail. And plans are for grooming the Lava Beds trail on Wednesday night. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
12/29/2009 December 29, 2009 Saturday, December 26, we groomed Lava Beds, Sage Valley and Duck Creek Ridge Road. On Monday, December 28 we groomed the Brian Head/High Mountain trail and on Tuesday the 29th we did the Navajo Lake trail. Not much new snow up there, but conditions are pretty good. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
12/21/2009 Not much new snow on the mountain, but there seems to be some in the forecast. Last week, the Strawberry Point and Lava Beds runs were groomed, and we were out Saturday night doing Sage Valley, Navajo Lake and Duck Creek Ridge Road. We plan to do the Cedar Breaks/Brian Head run again on Monday night. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
12/16/2009 More snow from the last storm has made things better up on Cedar Mountain. There was just over 3 feet of snow at our marker at the Sage Valley turnoff. On Monday the 14th we groomed the Cedar Breaks/Brian Head/High Mountain trail all the way to the end. This year we have added about 4 miles to that trail. The Strawberry Point trail was groomed on Tuesday night and we plan to do the Lava Beds trail on Wednesday night. Tentative plans are to groom Navajo Lake on Saturday. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions
12/10/2009 Grooming Report for Cedar Mountain – December 10, 2009

Last weekends big storm put down about 2 feet of snow on top of Cedar Mountain. Our measuring stick at the Sage Valley turnoff is showing 2 ½ feet as of Thursday. We groomed the Cedar Breaks run as far as the old water tank in Brian Head. There are a few spots where the snow it still thin, but for the most part there seems to be good snow. We plan to groom through Sage Valley to Navajo Lake on Friday. More snow is forecast for this coming weekend, so we’ll see what happens. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
11/28/2009 Grooming Report for Cedar Mountain – November 28, 2009

So far, Cedar Mountain hasn’t received enough snow to begin grooming. We need at least 2 ½ - 3 feet of snow to run the groomer. So keep watching the weather and hope for lots of snow soon. We’ll update this message when we get new reports. Contact Michael Franklin, Dean Anderson, or Brian Kurta at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (435-648-2800) with any questions.
