Despite the recent dump of snow we got yesterday and today, we are finished grooming for the season. Low snow at the trailheads and budget issues force us to stop grooming. Some of the best riding is still to come as the forecast calls for more snow for the next few days. Ride safe and we will see you next year.

As I sit at my desk and look out the window it is snowing very hard. A strong storm tonight is scheduled to put down at least a foot or more of snow and that is good news for our snowpack which is currently pretty shallow. We have lost most of our low elevation snowpack and we will end our grooming on Saturday. We will groom the Soapstone, Noblett's, Mill Hollow, and Lakecreek trails tonight and tomorrow night and that will be it for the season. We had a great season with minimal breakdowns. While the riding season will continue for at least a month or more for you diehard sledders, the trails will get bumpy.

You can find a copy of our grooming schedule on this website at http://www.snowut.org/mirrorlkmillh.htm that you can print out. We stick to this schedule pretty tight unless we have a breakdown or a really severe storm. Remember that we may be on the trail at anytime so ride under control at all times. If you hit us, it’s your fault!

Remember to go out prepared including survival and avalanche gear. Check on the avalanche conditions by calling 1-800-OHV-RIDE or www.avalanche.org/~uac/. Ride safe and we will see you on the trails!!!

We are on track with our grooming schedule for the week. Mondays run Soapstone nobblets and up to the top of Lake Creek was ok the snow conditions are improving a little. New snow at the bottom and about 6 to 10 inches on the top, It was snowing hard and blowing the new snow is great we need it. The snow conditions over all are fair it seems to be melting fast. The trails are in ok shape. It is hard to say how much longer we will be grooming. The lower level there is not much snow. We are planning on grooming until the end of March or until we do not have enough snow at the lower elevations. With the new snow the Avalanche danger is still moderate to Low. Make sure you are wearing a beacon. We will be grooming Mirror Lake and Soapstone, Nobblets, and lake Creek this week. Ride safe and enjoy the snow while we still have some.

You can find a copy of our grooming schedule on this website at http://www.snowut.org/mirrorlkmillh.htm that you can print out. We stick to this schedule pretty tight unless we have a breakdown or a really severe storm. Warm days, warm nights, and not much new snow is making for difficult grooming conditions. We are losing much of the lower snow and bare spots are starting to show on the North Fork Trail, the Noblett's Trailhead, and the Lakecreek Trail. We will continue grooming as long as we can but we are tentatively planning on March 27th as the end of the grooming season, if we make it that long. We have been grooming and the trails are in fair condition, however the warm temperatures make it difficult to do a really good job.

3/8/2010 We received a decent amount of snow last weekend but it is disappearing fast. Conditions for this weekend, however, should be about as good as any this year (good or bad, you decide). Hazardous obstacles have been and continue to be plaguing riders all season--be careful.

Trails are in good shape and holding up well for now. You can find a copy of our grooming schedule on this website at http://www.snowut.org/mirrorlkmillh.htm that you can print out.

Partly cloudy conditions expected on Saturday with possibility of rain in lower elevations turning to snow higher up. Partly cloudy weather on Sunday should be prevalent most of the day but rain/snow not expected.

Avalanche conditions for the Uintas are MODERATE to CONSIDERABLE. For further details call the avalanche center at 1-800-648-7433 or go to www.avalanche.org. See you on the trails!!!

3/8/2010 We are not on track with our grooming schedule for the week. Mondays run Soapstone nobblets and up to the top of Lake Creek will not be completed this week due to other obligations. The snow conditions are great the storm that hit Friday dumped about 2 feet of new wet snow on top of the mountains. The trails are in good shape. We are planning on grooming until the end of March or until we do not have enough snow at the lower elevations. With the new snow the Avalanche danger is still moderate to high. There are a lot of areas sliding naturally with a lot of large drifts on top of the ridges. That is bad if you like to play on the hills. They could break loose at any time. Make sure you are wearing a beacon. We will be grooming Mirror Lake and highway 35 to Hanna this week. Ride safe and enjoy the snow.

3/4/2010 Again several weak small storms this week put down several inches of new snow but nothing to write home about. The trails are still in great shape despite spring like grooming conditions. Warm days and nights make for tough grooming. We are already losing our low elevation snow and unless we get some big storms coming through it will be an early end to the grooming season. Not a great year for snow. We missed our Wednesday run due to the USCG helicopter crash in the area and Rangers responding to it - Please do not visit this site until the accident investigation team is through!.

In steep, rocky, mid and upper elevation terrain the stability pattern remains tricky and the avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3). Human triggered wind slabs along with dangerous slides which break into weak snow near the ground are probable in this type of terrain. The danger is most pronounced on steep slopes with a weak, shallow snowpack. A MODERATE (Level 2) avalanche danger exists on steep, mid elevation slopes, especially those with recent deposits of wind drifted snow and human triggered avalanches are possible.

Low elevation terrain and most mid elevation sun exposed slopes have a LOW avalanche danger.

We are on schedule for grooming and the trails should be in great shape. You can find a copy of our grooming schedule on this website at http://www.snowut.org/mirrorlkmillh.htm that you can print out. 3/1/2010 We are on track with our grooming schedule for the week. Mondays run Soapstone nobblets and up to the top of Lake Creek went well. The snow conditions are turning in to more like a springtime condition with the warmer weather. The lower levels are hurting for snow. We received about 2 inches of new snow on top in the past few days. The trails are in good shape. The Avalanche danger is still moderate there are a lot of areas sliding naturally. That is bad if you like to play on the hills. They could break loose at any time. Make sure you are wearing a beacon. We will be grooming Mirror Lake and highway 35 to Hanna this week. 2/26/2010 Several small storms this week put down about 6-12 inches of new snow so riding conditions are good. The avalanche conditions right now are CONSIDERABLE. In steep, rocky, mid and upper elevation terrain the stability pattern is complicated and the avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3) on slopes that face northwest through southeast, particularly those with a shallow snowpack. Dangerous human triggered slides which break into weak snow near the ground are probable in this type of terrain. By day’s end I expect the avalanche danger to rise to HIGH (Level 4) with both natural and human triggered slides becoming likely. Low elevation terrain and most mid elevation sun exposed slopes have a LOW avalanche danger.

We are on schedule for grooming and the trails should be in great shape. 2/18/2010 Mother nature continues to provides new snow every few days. This week we received about 8 inches of new snow and the forecast for the weekend is for more snow with minimal accumulations but at this point we will take anything we can get. The snowpack is still under 50% for the year so we need to make up some ground. The avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3) on high and mid elevation slopes that face NW, N, NE, E & SE due to a persistent deep slab avalanche hazard. These deep slabs have been failing at the ground naturally in the last few days, and many of these slopes hang in the balance. Watch for a few lingering wind slabs on slopes that face NE, E, SE & S. Today's light disturbance could build fresh shallow wind slabs on these same aspects.

We are on schedule for grooming and the trails should be in great shape. 2/11/2010 Several small storms this week will put down a few inches of new snow. The first system that went through this morning put down about 4 inches of snow and two more forecasted for this weekend should give us another shot but nothing big. The snowpack is pretty shallow with only a couple feet of snow in most areas. The lakes will be pretty empty this summer if we don't get bigger storms heading our way.

2/4/2010 Not much to report this week as the skies have been bright and sunny. A great week to get out and enjoy the fresh snow from last week. We did have small fronts come through mid-week that put down a little new snow but not much. The snowpack is still pretty thin with only 4 feet at the highest elevations and less than 2 feet down low. Hopefully we will get some big storms before the end of the season or our lakes will be dry!

1/28/2010 The recent storms have deposited several feet of new snow in the higher elevations and 12 inches at most trailheads. Of course this has dramatically improved riding conditions allowing off trail riding without too much danger of hitting unseen obstacles. The key word there is "too much" meaning that there are still objects just under the snow surface that can break your sled and injure you. Caution is still advised. On our grooming runs, we have been seeing numerous avalanches so please be careful. Luckily we made it through this past weekend without anyone being killed, although there were numerous close calls.

1/23/2010 South Mirror Lake and Mill Hollow area:

We’ve been receiving more snow. Snow levels at the higher elevations are increasing with approximately four (4) feet of snow off the trails. Not yet risk-free from hazardous obstacles. Be mindful of where you ride and what type of snow conditions and depths exist.

Today’s forecast has cloudy skies and snow until Saturday. High temperatures reaching 25 for Saturday and Sunday accompanied with partly cloudy skies.

We are following our grooming schedule for this week; however, we did not groom the Mirror Lake run on Thursday. For a printout of the schedule, go to http://www.snowut.org/mirrorlkmillh.htm.

Avalanche conditions for the Uintas are HIGH. Call 1-800-648-7433 for further avalanche details. Make sure you have at least the basic avalanche and survival gear when you head out. Have fun and we’ll see you on the mountains.

1/23/2010 We have to change our grooming schedule due to breakdowns and avalanche conditions. We were unable to groom up Mill Hollow on Friday night as we were advised by the Utah Avalanche Forecast Center to not take the snowcat through the area due to the extreme avalanche conditions. Good advice as I just received word that Mill Hollow slid sometime Saturday morning, luckily not trapping anyone. I also just recieved word of another avalanche triggered by snowmobilers somewhere near Tower Mountain. USE YOUR HEAD folks or we are going to have an accident. You should be nowhere near any terrain that can slide. There are plenty of safe places to play especially with all the fresh powder. Due to a breakdown last night we will not be grooming Saturday night either so the trails will be bumpy. We will get back on schedule on Monday. BE CAREFUL! Dying under the snow would not be fun!!

1/19/2010 We are on track with our grooming schedule for the week. Fridays run up over lake creek summit went well as did Saturdays. Mondays run went well there was new snow falling in the higher elevations. The snow conditions are improving we hope this storm brings much needed snow. We will be grooming mirror lake and highway 35 to Hanna this week. Only 2-3 feet on top a lot of rocks are still showing. The highway 35 has only about 10’’ of snow covering in the lower levels. 1/14/2010 Finally a small storm has rolled in and put down at least a couple inches of new snow. You know conditions are bad when you celebrate a 2" snowfall. The snow pack remains thin with only about 3 feet of snow at the higher elevations and 12" down low. There are lots of rocks and stumps and we have seen numerous "dealer specials" being towed off the mountain. The trails are in great shape, so much so that we are not doing the Mirror Lake run scheduled for today. We will be on schedule for the rest of the week and weekend.

1/12/2010 Snow conditions are holding at lower-than-normal levels. There is approximately three (3) feet of snow off the trails in the higher elevations. Off-trail use is still risky, as hazardous obstacles (rocks, tree stumps, fence posts, etc.) can still cause problems. We are hearing of snowmobiles taking a beating and receiving some costly damages. Be mindful of where you ride and what type of snow conditions and depths exist.

Today’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies for the next few days with high temperatures reaching the low 30s. Some snow is expected to fall on Wednesday and Thursday.

1/8/2010 We received a few new inches of snow in the last several days but certainly not enough to call in sick from work. We only have about 3' of snow up high, what I call "dealer snow" and there are still plenty of rocks, stumps, etc, just waiting to get a piece of your sled. Be careful. We are on schedule for grooming and the trails should be in great shape. You can find a copy of our grooming schedule on this website at http://www.snowut.org/mirrorlkmillh.htm that you can print out. We stick to this schedule pretty tight unless we have a breakdown or a really severe storm. Remember that all our runs are done at night but we may be on the trail at anytime so ride under control at all times. If you hit us, it’s your fault!

12/24/09 We are on track with our grooming schedule for the most part. Fridays run up over lake creek summit went well as did Saturdays. Mondays run we cut short due to mechanical problems. Most of the run was completed. The snow conditions are weak there is not much of a base once off the trail. Only 2-3 feet on top a lot of rocks are still showing. The highway 35 has only about 10" of snow covering in the lower levels. Ride safe and enjoy the snow.

12/24/09 Snow conditions are improving slowing but are still not ideal. We have begun our grooming runs so the trails should be in good condition. Off-trail use, however, is risky, as hazardous obstacles (rocks, tree stumps, fence posts, etc.) have not been sufficiently buried. Joe and I had difficulty riding out of a lower valley in the Wolf Creek area that with normal (better) snow conditions would not otherwise have been a problem. Fortunately our snowmobiles were powerful enough (barely) to get us out. So, be mindful of where you ride and what type of snow condition is present.

Today’s forecast calls for partly cloudy and cold weather. Expect riding conditions to be fair in most areas.

We are canceling the grooming run on Christmas day. Also, today’s (Thursday the 24th) run was completed yesterday for this week, and yesterday’s run was cancelled. Next week’s runs are as per schedule.

Avalanche conditions for the Uintas are MODERATE with a few pocket areas containing SEVERE conditions. Call 1-800-648-7433 for further avalanche details.

12/14/09 This past weekends storm finally gave us enough snow to start grooming. The trail heads received about 20" of snow and the higher elevations about 30". We will start grooming on Wednesday and will follow the posted schedule for the coming week and weekend. Be careful as all the new snow is sitting on some weaker layers so the avalanche danger is high. Be safe and remember to get your machines registered!
12/10/09 We have not started grooming yet as they just recently closed both Mirror Lake Hwy and Hwy 35. We only have about 8" of snow at the trailheads and 20" at the higher elevations. We need at least another foot of snow before we can start grooming and would prefer 2 feet. There is some riding to be had on the Mill Hollow and Lakecreek area roads but getting off the trail is a betting man's game. Hopefully we will start grooming next week if mother nature cooperates. Thanks
